
As trees were removed and land cleared in the Grand River watershed - during the 19th and early 20th centuries - water levels fluctuated wildly resulting in
increased flooding in towns along the river. In 1942 the Shand Dam was built in Fergus - the first dam built in Canada for water control purposes.
