cliff cedar

Amazing how these trees survive growing on the cliff face - with roots implanted into small cracks.

There is a recently discovered old growth forest consisting of ancient cedars (some 1300 years old) growing along the cliff faces of the Niagara Escarpment. This fascinating story is recounted in a recently published book called The Last Stand by Guelphites Larson and Kelly. Highly Recommended.

Economy Falls

After a somewhat harrowing half hour drive in a rental car (that's good and bad) up a track we were sure couldn't actually be the right way we arrived at the parking lot ( i.e. the end of the road) then a short hike over to the 186 step stairway down to the bottom of the canyon to view Economy Falls. Worth it. S went swimming. I swear I saw some floes in the tannin coloured water.

The Old Villa by the Speed Trail

The Old Villa by the Speed Trail at Ignatius crossing a small creek on a very cold morning - we met a few snowshoers and skiers. You can park along Cross Creek - there's a public access point into the river forest.
