Colour Vision

Some believe that colour vision evolved because it conferred an advantage - the ability to select better food. Others believe it allowed better determination of the moods of those we interact with - emotional states are reflected in changes of skin tone. A sutble monkey's rump.
And still others believe G_d designed colour vision so we could...you fill in the blank...enjoy colour TV more? (Pamela Anderson handing out Junos)

I'm fairly confident colour vision evolved long before the specific caucasian environmental variance (no genetic markers for cacausian, Asian or African ethnicity), or the organic section at Thrifty's. Which god?

See some beliefs here: news item
Then again some point to current events as proof that in fact we have not evolved. Which god? Good question. Not Ares I hope.

That study from Caltech is possibly racist. At the very least it inexplicably overlooks the fact indigenous Africans generally display very little to no detectable fluctuation in skintone.
Doesn't the "intelligent design" crowd 'focus' on the evolution of the eyeball as one 'glaring' irregularity to prop up their bilge?
Usualy when a person hesitates to spell the name of "god" eg., G_D, YHWH, JHVH, etc., it is the Old Testament god Jehovah to whom they refer; a strong, patriarchal semi-nomadic hill-shepherd-god invented by a hard-scrabble and semi-nomadic shepherding society. What a surprise.
Beautiful photography, by the way.

Yes, enough of Ares. Note since the outset of the war in Iraq generally complacent and affluent ie., media-saturated societies have shifted to the right of the political spectrum, while a majority of societies very much defined by the struggle for social justice have shifted, electorally, to the left.

Hi Lorna, the argument from design has an ancient history and is currently being popularized again by anti-rational fundamentalists in the U.S. and elsewhere. It fails on both logic and observation. For example, if the world really was designed by a non-evil G_d why are so many millions of innocent children suffering from horrible physical and mental tortures throughout the world?
My mention of Pamela Anderson was an admittedly light handed comment on the failure of the design argument regarding two of my pet peeves - the insatiable market for TV pap/porn and the music industry.
Hunter S Thompson once said, ""The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."
The JUNO awards could have honoured as MC one of the numerous hard working Canadians who have dedicated their lives to improving our lives through musical arts. Instead we're fed unmusical tarts.

anonymous, I am curious to know which countries have shifted left. My vision in these matters is admittedly cloudy, but I don't hear them either.

Well, I'm thinking of the Bolivarian Revolution in South America. Venezuela, Equador, Bolivia and one or two other countries, the names of which escape me at present. The socialists in Mexico are running a winning campaign, with an election a little over two weeks away. Plus Lula in Brazil is quasi-left but Brazil is burdened by massive interference from internation capital. With the exception of Spain, Europe has slid toward dangerous reactionary politics again. Fascists poll close to 20% in parts of France, Britain, Austria and Germany.
